LUBBOCK – Oklahoma and Texas Tech were never going to compete with their last Lubbock match in a pure offensive.
Strangeness? Yeah, you bet.
By the time Oklahoma's CFP # 7 had secured a 51-46 victory after almost four hours on Saturday, the spark was shifting into high gear.
"We fought," said technical coach Kliff Kingsbury. "We just have to find a way to win one of those games."
Quarterback Kyler Murray of Oklahoma threw two interceptions in his first three attempts. Technical quarterback Alan Bowman did not return after halftime, shaking after a shot in the first half near the goal line by Curtis Bolton of Oklahoma.
"It was nothing with his head," Kingsbury said, contradicting an early broadcast on ABC.
And Tech went from an eight-point deficit against Oklahoma in the fourth quarter to a four-point deficit after scoring a touchdown. Not really.
After the Red Raiders alternate quarterback, Jett Duffey, found Zach Austin able to bring Tech within 42-40 seconds of the end of the match, head coach Kliff Kingsbury decided to score tied. Instead, a tip has returned against us. Receiver Seth Collins attempted a desperate pass in the end zone.
Robert Barnes of Oklahoma intercepted a depth of 5 meters and brought it back for two points. Instead of a tie, Tech lost 44-40.
"You do not expect them to send it back," said Kingsbury. "This is not about [Collins]. It's up to me to call him. "
Oklahoma won the match on a 75-yard touchdown in his next possession. Trey Sermon ran the last 30 yards for his third touchdown. Sermon finished with 206 yards in 26 races.
Tech scored on a quarterback by Duffey with 1:05 left to go. But the Red Raiders went astray during the two-point conversion and the subsequent kick went out of bounds.
Murray rebounded after the first two interceptions to record a total of 460 yards (360 assists in 100, 100 shots on goal) while counting four touchdowns. He became the first player in the history of the OU with 300 yards and 100 yards in a game. Murray came into play with only three interceptions in eight games and 183 pass attempts.
The Sooners have amassed a total attack of 683 yards. Tech was less linebacker Dakota Allen for most of the game. The radio show Tech reported that he had been injured in the left knee early in the game. He was already playing with a broken hand.
"We lose and let them win 52 points, it's not a good day for the defense," said defender Justus Parker.
With the win, Oklahoma (8-1, 5-1) remained tied for the first time in the Big 12 with West Virginia. The two meet in the last game of the regular season.
Tech (5-4, 3-3) has lost his second straight and needs a win to qualify. Duffey was 9 out of 17 to pass for 139 yards of relief and 47 miles. Technical receiver Antoine Wesley played a monster match with 12 receptions for 199 yards.
Duffey was forced to play after halftime. Kingsbury said Bowman's injury was due to a hard blow to his team mate late in the first half. Bowman had suffered from a partially collapsed lung last month against West Virginia.
Bowman led Tech to a 31-28 lead at half-time, completing 21 of 26 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns.
At times, the first half was more or less similar to the record shootings that both teams played in Lubbock two years ago. Future NFL quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes face each other.
In this match, Oklahoma led 30-24 at half-time, but the situation was getting worse.
