Chris Weidman is sick to heart again at Madison Square Garden.
The former middleweight champion, fighting for the second time in front of the public, suffered an impressive final in the round of 16, at the hands of Jacare Souza, during a hot match in the main co-event. from Saturday to UFC 230.
Souza and Weidman are some of the best wrestlers in the world, but their fight was an amazing kickboxing match. They hit each other with hard knocks and the fight did not go to the ground. It was over and it was over when Souza caught Weidman with a right to the temple.
Weidman made a deadly fall on his back and Souza was held there, not wanting to hit him. It was obvious that Weidman was absent, but referee Dan Miragliotta did not stop him immediately. Souza shouted at Miragliotta, landed three punches, then screamed again after the referee stopped him late at 2:46 of the third.
It was the fourth defeat of his last five outings for Weidman, who grew up on Long Island and had the crowd heavily in his favor on Saturday. It was reminiscent of Weidman's last fight in The Garden, when he was caught in the third by a knee kick by Yoel Romero and stopped.
Souza is one of the most dangerous wrestlers in the sport and Weidman made the conscious decision to keep the fight on arrival.
It was a fight back and forth, each suffering damage, but Souza was more interested in the body and it could have been casualties. Just before the decisive right that let him down, Souza landed on Weidman's body.
It was a huge win for Souza, who took fifth place in the fight. Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will defend the belt against No. 4 Kelvin Gastelum in Australia in February, and it is likely that Souza will win.
It will be a handle for whoever wins, because Souza is no longer a one-dimensional fighter. Early in his career, Souza's stand-up was rudimentary, but he won a stand-up battle without ever having had the chance to use his greatest talent.
Weidman was 20-18 on two cards and the match was tied 19-19 on the third.
