An Idaho school district is under fire after more than a dozen staff members disguised as Mexican stereotypes – and a border wall – for Halloween.
With the removal of photos posted on the Middleton School District Facebook page, Middleton Heights Elementary School employees are wearing sombreros and ponchos while wearing fake mustaches and maracas.
A second group smiles holding pieces of cardboard painted like a brick wall, adorned with the slogan of President Trump's campaign, "Make America Great Again."
According to Beth Almanza, an advocate for immigrant rights in Idaho, the images were "heartbreaking".
"Imagine what some students felt when they entered their classrooms on Halloween and saw their teachers (people they admired) dressed like that?" Wrote Almanza. on Facebook.
The district removed the photos after the parents complained of their insensitivity, according to the KBOI in Boise.
"As the mother of a child belonging to a minority, I would be mortified if it were my child's teacher. They should be fired, "said a relative at the station.
District Director Josh Middleton said in an apology video on Friday that he was "deeply troubled" by the staff members' decision to wear suits "that are clearly insensitive and inappropriate … we are better than that. "
He continued, "Do I think that there was a malicious intent in these bad decisions? No, was there any bad judgment involved? Absolutely."
The 14 staff members were put on paid leave, according to the Superintendent, who added that "a member of the district crisis team would take on the main daily duties in Middleton Heights at the moment".
