The Georgian secretary of state, headed by Republican candidate for governor Brian Kemp, has opened an investigation into the Democratic Party of Georgia after an alleged attempt to hack the state's voter registration system.
Georgia's Democratic Party said on Sunday that the allegation was "100% false" and "abuse of power" by the Kemp office.
The Secretary of State's office provided little details on the investigation two days before the election of the Georgian governor between Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams. Kemp's office did not reveal any evidence in support of the allegation.
"Although we can not comment on the details of an ongoing investigation, I can confirm that the Democratic Party of Georgia is currently under investigation for cyber-crimes," he said. Candice Broce, spokeswoman for the Office of the Secretary of State. "We can also confirm that no personal data has been violated and that our system remains secure."
The Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia, Rebeccca DeHart, described the investigation as a "political coup" just before polling day.
"Brian Kemp is desperate to save his failed campaign and it is likely that we will see even more abuse of power in the run-up to the elections," DeHart said.
The alleged hacking attempt was reported on Saturday night, according to the secretary of state's office.
The office has alerted the FBI and the US Department of Homeland Security.
