KIEV, Ukraine – Several hundred people gathered in front of the headquarters of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry after the death of an anti-corruption activist who had been attacked with acid three months ago .

Kateryna Handziuk died Sunday in a hospital where she was being treated for burns caused by the July 31 attack.

Police arrested five people, including the alleged perpetrator. They have not identified anyone suspected of having sponsored the attack on Handziuk, who was an assistant to the Mayor of Kherson City and an activist.

The people who paid tribute to Handziuk on Sunday called for intensifying efforts to find those responsible.

Attorney General Yuri Lutsenko said in August that separatist organizations have been implicated with the aim of destabilizing the south of Ukraine. Kherson is an important port city.
