Pete Davidson criticized for SNL drawing mocking Dan Crenshaw wearing an eye patch

Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson is the subject of much criticism in "Weekend Update", in which he mocked GOP Congressman Dan Crenshaw for wearing an eye patch .

Crenshaw, who represents Texas' second congressional district, lost his right eye in 2012 following a bomb blast during a mission to Afghanistan, his third military deployment. Although he was told that he would probably never see again, Crenshaw recovered the sight of his left eye and performed two other deployments.

Davidson seemed aware of Crenshaw's history at Saturday's Weekend, where he gave his "first impressions" of the various candidates running in this election cycle.

"This guy is pretty cool, Dan Crenshaw," said Davidson, while an image of Crenshaw wearing an eye patch appeared on the screen.

His co-host, Michael Che, chuckled and said, "Yo, come on."

"Wait," Davidson replied. "You may be surprised to hear that there is a candidate for the Texas Congress and not a hit in a porn movie."

The audience laughed.

"I'm sorry, I know he lost an eye to the war or elsewhere," Davidson added, shrugging and smiling. "It does not matter."

Asked Sunday on the case, a representative of the NBC said the network would not comment.

Online, dozens of people expressed anger about the skit and asked Davidson and NBC to apologize.

"Getting dumped by your pop star girlfriend is not an excuse for taking on a decorated war hero who has lost his eye to serving our country," said Jack Pandol, a spokesman for word of the National Committee of the Republican Congress declaration which referred to Davidson's recent separation from singer Ariana Grande.

The Republican Party of Texas called the bit "absolutely abominable. "

Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.), Another candidate who is being mocked by Davidson's cartoon, said the attack at Crenshaw was a "shame" and said the comedian should be expelled from the show.

"What are the shooting standards of NBC? PC to insult wounded veterans?!? "King request. "(Davidson also insulted me, who cares ?!)"

In a tweet Sunday afternoon, Crenshaw acknowledged his outrage at Davidson's joke. He did not ask for an apology, but he urged the scriptwriters in the series not to use injured veterans as "punches".

"Good rule in life: I try not to offend; I do my best not to be offended, "wrote Crenshaw. "That being said, I hope [SNL] recognizes that veterinarians do not deserve to see their injuries used to make bad jokes. "
