Bryson DeChambeau signed a 16 – foot eagle kick at the 16th hole which led to a win of under 66 and a one – shot victory over Patrick Cantlay at the 39; Shriners Hospital for Children open Sunday.
DeChambeau has won his last 12 starts on the PGA Tour for the fourth time and has climbed to 5th place overall.
At TPC Summerlin, he had to survive at nine points and four players had a part of the head at one point. Cantlay, who was attempting to become the first player to win two consecutive victories in Las Vegas in nearly 20 years, clocked a 15-foot putt at the 16th hole of 5-par to take a lead of one shot. But since a bunker located to the right of the green on the normal 3 of the 17th, Cantlay was duped by the amount of sand under his ball and missed the shot.
A hole behind him, DeChambeau rolled in his long eagle putt right next to the green and celebrated with a big uppercut. Cantlay missed his long match, giving DeChambeau control of the tournament.
Cantlay birdied 18th for a 65, but that was not enough when DeChambeau played the last two holes conservatively for the peers to finish at 21-under 263.
DeChambeau won for the third consecutive season and the fifth time overall on the PGA Tour.
The 25-year-old American started his great race with a playoff victory at Memorial, before winning two consecutive FedEx Cup playoff tournaments in New Jersey and Boston. He said that he was playing in Las Vegas to get rid of a little rust that turned into another victory.
"I've been able to play excellent golf," said DeChambeau. "I'm happy to do it."
Not since Jim Furyk in 1998-99, no one had managed to defend his title in Las Vegas, and Cantlay seemed to do it when he was driving the green at the normal-4 for a birdie of two putts, then another good bird after having to lie down on the 16th.
His starting shot in the 17th was a fraction away from taking a slope and feeding towards the hole. Instead, he fell into the bunker to install what appeared to be a relatively simple shot.
"When I pushed down my left foot, there was not a lot of sand," Cantlay said. "I shot it and there was more sand under the balloon, I did not expect it."
He was not the only player stung by the result.
Former US Open champion Lucas Glover made a 4-foot putt birdie on the 15th hole, which would have given him a head start with three holes to play. Glover missed the putt, then a 30-inch putt. A hole later, he was three strokes late.
Glover finished with a triple bogey for a 71 and tied for seventh place.
Peter Uihlein, who shared with 54 holes in advance with DeChambeau, did not manage to make a bird until the 11th hole. He finished bogey-bogey for a 75 and tied for the 23rd.
Sam Ryder was a throw-away when his second shot at the 16th par-5 bounced off a pommel and went back into the water. He managed to save the normal and score the last hole with a 15-by-62 putt to finish alone in third.
Rickie Fowler (63), Abraham Ancer (66) and Robert Streb (68) were lost.
DeChambeau won his 68th professional start on the PGA Tour for the fifth time, earning his victory at the John Deere Classic in 2017.
