NASA has released a new video on its YouTube channel, but it's no surprise that the US space agency drops one every day. This one, however, is special: it's the world's first 8K video footage shot in space. The video was shot on a RED Helium 8K camera by astronauts from the International Space Station. The camera is capable of capturing a video at 8192 x 4320 pixels.
"This new sequence presents the history of manned spaceflight with more detail than ever before," commented Dylan Mathis in a NASA press release, responsible for communications for the International Space Station program at the Johnson Space Center. The RED Helium 8K camera was delivered to the International Space Station during the 14th SpaceX cargo replenishment mission in April, as part of a Space Act agreement between NASA and RED. Although the camera was delivered in April, NASA managed to edit the images returned from the space station only in November. The video was removed to YouTube on November 2, marking the 18th anniversary of the human presence aboard the International Space Station and the 20th anniversary of the launch of the first two elements of space.
NASA 8K video is best viewed on monitors or 8K TVs, which, it is true, are still very few.
