The water supply system serving Chapel Hill, Carrboro and UNC-Chapel Hill Monday instructed its customers to limit their water consumption after the rupture of a pipeline from the water treatment plant to the storage tanks .
The Orange Water and Sewer Authority also wants customers to boil water while the system is operating at low pressure. Additional details on boiling orders are available on the OWASA website.
"A main water main coming out of OWASA's Jones Ferry Road water treatment plant is broken," the utility said in a message posted on its website.
"The main break is to actively empty OWASA's water storage, and teams are on hand to isolate the break," OWASA said. "Please limit consumption to an essential use: drinking and basic hygiene. We must preserve the community's water supply in case of urgent need. "
The break in the water line caused UNC-Chapel Hill to close for the day, according to the UNC warning system, although university residency students could remain on campus. The boil order expands on campus and the university is in Condition 2.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools will also close sooner, according to a press release issued by the school district.
Primary schools will be closed at 11:30, followed by colleges at noon and high schools at 13:00.
OWASA says its system provides water to more than 80,000 people.
