A 2-year-old Alvin girl mutilated to death by the family dog
A 2-year-old girl in Alvin was mutilated to death by the family dog early Friday night, confirmed the sheriff of Brazoria County.
The attack occurred around 17 hours. Friday on 3900 block of Morning Dove Street in Alvin. The toddler was killed by the family dog, which would be a mixture of the leopard breed, a hound.
"It's a terrible incident where the family dog has attacked a 2-year-old child. We do not know why," said Brazoria sheriff Charles Wagner. "It's been a long time since anything happened, it's a tragedy for everyone involved."
The dog had no known antecedent of violence or aggression, said Lieutenant Varon Snelgrove. The mother and children were returning home after a shopping outing and were in a bag when the dog suddenly attacked the girl in the yard, he said. The jaw of the dog got stuck around the torso and throat and everything went very fast.
"The family could not have done anything," Snelgrove said. "It's just a horrible horrible incident."
The sheriff's office does not disclose the name of the family or the victim at this time.
Forensic Pathologists in Galveston County will perform a routine autopsy. The dog has been euthanized and will be tested for rabies.
Dog attacks are fairly common in the Houston area, but deaths are rare. An 8 week old infant was killed last year by two family dogs – a Labrador retriever mix and a schnauzer mix.
Last month, last spring, a group of neighborhood pit bulls and a retriever attacked and bit a 13-year-old boy and a MP who answered the call. Police shot at one of the pit bulls, but he survived.
In August, a Baytown woman was seriously injured after being attacked by two dogs while she was babysitting.
Similarly, a 20-year-old Pearland woman was attacked by one of her parents' dogs in December and had to be transported to a hospital by helicopter. Police killed this dog during the intervention. Also in December, a 4-year-old boy was nearly killed by his aunt's pit bulls at Liberty.
In San Antonio, authorities have recently reported a series of five serious injuries caused by dog attacks during a three-week period in September. Last year, a pit bull ripped off the arm of an elderly woman from San Antonio. The dog owners in this case were sentenced to prison terms.
