A 29-year-old man died of a cerebral amoeba after visiting a water park.

Fabrizio Stabile, 29, from Atlantic County, New Jersey, died on September 21 after a rare infection with naegleria fowleri, a microscopic amoeba that can destroy the brain. It is found in fresh water.

Newsweek reports that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are testing the water at BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort in Waco, Texas, for naegleria fowleri. Stabile used the wave pool at the extreme water sports park.

NJ.com, citing a GoFundMe page in honor of Stabile, writes:

When Stabile returned to New Jersey, said the fundraiser, he reported a sudden and severe headache when mowing the lawn.

The situation only worsened the next day and when his mother went to watch him, he could not move or speak coherently. According to the GoFundMe page, he was rushed to a hospital in the area where he was treated for meningitis symptoms.

Stabile "has been tested for a multitude of diseases caused by various viruses and bacteria, but the results have been negative or inconclusive," says the GoFundMe page.

He was finally tested positive for Naegleria fowleri on Thursday, September 20th, the day before his death.

The infection with the amoeba is rare. According to the CDC, 34 cases were reported from 2008 to 2017 in the United States.

The infection is almost always fatal because it destroys the brain tissue.
