Mayanei Hayeshua Hospital announced Monday morning that a three-week-old child had been diagnosed with measles and is now in stable condition. The baby resides in Immanuel, a predominantly Haredi city of Samaria.

The baby is the youngest known patient in Israel to have measles. The newborn caught measles from his mother while he had just had a week.

The mother, who was not vaccinated, was apparently infected by a family member.

"Measles at such a young age is rare," said Professor Eli Somekh, director of the Children's Division at the hospital.

"The baby has been treated with vitamin A to reduce the risk of complications and the use of intravenous antibiotics due to signs of bacterial infection, with an improvement in its condition, which is now stable, "said the professor.

Somekh also emphasized the importance of being vaccinated against measles before pregnancy and being vaccinated against tetanus in the third trimester.
