A 4-year-old boy was killed Saturday by his 20-year-old brother from his seven-story building in Brooklyn, police said Saturday.

Officers responded to a 911 call at 3:30 pm about an unconscious child from Nostrand Avenue in the East Midwood neighborhood and found the boy, Shimron Smith, not answering in a backyard.

He was declared dead on the scene. The brother has been detained and should be charged for the death of the boy, police said.

Officers blocked access to the yard on Saturday afternoon. A section of the fire escape leading to the roof was blocked by a police band and guarded by two officers.

The neighbors described Shimron as an adorable boy whom they often saw running and laughing on their way to and from school.

"He was always smiling, always laughing and running, like a 4-year-old on average," said Nicole Pierre, 30, an occupational therapist who has lived in the building for 22 years. "That's why it's so sad."

Ms. Pierre said she heard the news when she was trying to get home early Saturday and that she could not get into her building.

"It deeply shocked me," she said.

The older brother has been described by many neighbors as mentally unstable. Several neighbors said that they had never seen Shimron with the brother.

The neighbors spoke of Shimron and his brother in disbelief on hearing the news. Around 12:30 pm, a neighbor opposite came with a bouquet of flowers.

He placed the flowers in front of the building, silently respected and wiped the tears from his face before leaving.

"May God give peace to your soul, Shimron Smith," read a card attached to the flowers.
