A 62-year-old man was rescued from the depths of a mine shaft in Arizona on Wednesday, two days after diving into the pit and started an ordeal in which he treated his many injuries while simultaneously protecting a trio rattlesnakes, officials said.

John Waddell was kidnapped Wednesday from his well, after his friend, Terry Schrader, heard Waddell howling near Eagle Eye Road and Terminal 13, located about 35 miles south of Aguila, Arizona, the Phoenix FOX10 report.

"He called me on Monday and told me that he was coming to the mine," Schrader told FOX10. "We have always had an agreement: he's not back on Tuesday, [come look for him] because he said that he would be back on Tuesday. "

Schrader added, "I did not go down on Tuesday, I did it today. [Wednesday]… I was scared of what I was going to find. "

Schrader said that he was going to the pit of the mine and soon heard the sound of his friend screaming.

"When I took out my truck, I heard him shout," Help, help! Said Schrader. "I've had enough [cellphone service] that the deputies were on their way. "

When Waddell fell into the well on Monday, he broke both legs. Worse, while he was lying helpless, he suddenly discovered that several rattlesnakes were crawling around him. Waddell said that he had managed to kill three of the snakes during his two days underground, while hoping that someone would finally hear him calling for help.

It took rescuers nearly six hours to get Waddell out of the well to secure him, then fly him to a hospital. Although Waddell was severely dehydrated and broken his legs, his injuries were not life-threatening, FOX10 reported.
