A girl was killed and her cousin was injured on Saturday when a tree fell on them as they swayed on a hammock in their grandparents' house in Virginia.

Sabina Surjit Henderson, age 7, and her cousin were in the hammock around 6pm. FOX5DC reported that when the elm slip was attached, it fell on it. Henderson was flown to the hospital where she died later.

Her 8-year-old cousin, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital and treated for internal injuries. It is expected that it will survive, reported FOX5DC.

The children were at Seven Elms Farm in Purcellville for a family reunion and swayed all day in the hammock, the Henderson family said.

Henderson had just started the second year before his death. A preliminary inquiry indicated that Henderson had died in a "tragic accident".

"Sabina was a smart and witty girl who loved to tell jokes and make others laugh," said the girl's father, Ben Henderson, in a statement to NBC Washington. "She was a powerful personality who lit up the room and was a memorable force for all who met her, she was incredibly kind and caring to her friends and family."

"Sabina was truly and completely loved by all who knew her. His loss has torn a giant hole in our lives that will never be repaired. We will never be able to recover, we will only survive, "said his father.
