Upper West Side, Manhattan (WABC) –

Police arrested a woman following the death of a 70-year-old woman who was found throat-slit in her Manhattan apartment last week.

Officers answered a call at 911, 710 West End Avenue, in the Upper West Side, around 4:50 am on October 21, and found the woman unconscious and unresponsive, lacerating her neck .

The victim, identified as Susan Trott, was declared dead on the scene. Police said that during a burglary in Trott's apartment, a kind of confrontation had led to his death.

The suspect was identified as Anya Johnston, 24 years old. She was arrested on Wednesday for murder and burglary.

The authorities had previously stated that Johnston lived in the same building and had to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at the hospital before he could be questioned.

According to sources, Johnston has a history of mental illness and has been hospitalized at least twice. On October 17, her mother reported her disappearance. She told the police that her daughter was acting irrationally.

The neighbors say that Trott was known in his building for his passion for dogs.

"She loved animals," said neighbor Helen Stein. "She loved sad dogs, saved, adored and well cared for."

The neighbors said that Trott was also trying to beautify his building and was working in the garden.
