"I can not walk anymore," Rodriguez said in Spanish. "I have so bad."
He will turn 92 in September, said Rodriguez, and he's never been hurt like that before, in a working life in the fields with cattle and corn.
He traveled from Michoacan, Mexico, to visit his family in Willowbrook, California, a city in Los Angeles County, said his grandson, Erik Mendoza.
He makes the trip about twice a year, and walks around the neighborhood every day after lunch, said Mendoza. "Everyone in the neighborhood already knows him," he said.
Rodriguez said that he was going to a nearby park on Wednesday when he came across a woman and a little girl. Without warning, the woman assaulted him, he said, hitting him with a concrete block and enlisting a group of men to beat him.
"I did not even stumble upon his kid," Rodriguez said. "I passed her and she pushed me and she hit me until she finished."
Upon arriving at CNN, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the attack had occurred but declined to comment further, stating that he would soon issue an official statement
Misbel Borjas was driving when she saw the woman hitting Rodriguez several times. she said in the head with a concrete block.
"I heard her say, go back to your country, go back to Mexico," she told CNN by phone. "When I tried to film her with my cell phone, she threw that same concrete block, tried to hit my car."
The police search for the woman and four men seen in the Borjas video, Robinson told KTLA.
Rodriguez said that he does not remember when the woman picked up the concrete block, but he remembers being hit repeatedly. At one point, he said, the woman ran to a group of men nearby and told them that Rodriguez was trying to take away his daughter – so the men joined him and started giving him kicking while he was bleeding on the sidewalk, Rodriguez told me.
"But that's not true," he said, through tears. "During the years that I have lived, I have never offended anyone."
Mendoza said that his grandfather had a broken jaw, broken cheekbones, two broken ribs and broken ribs. bruises on the face, back and abdomen. He spent five to six hours in the hospital, he said.
