A 14-year-old boy was hit and killed by a stray bullet in an apparently abnormal accident while sitting in the back seat of a car with his family on Sunday.

According to the Rich County Sheriff's Office, Zackary Kempke and his family were driving near the Monte Cristo mountain range in a remote area of Rich County, Utah.

The sheriff's office said the bullet came from someone who was shooting at a target several hundred meters from where Kempke had been shot.

The individual who fired the shot and several witnesses stated that they did not know that there was a road in the row, according to the sheriff's office, and could not see the vehicle pass because of massive trees and brushwood blocking their view.

Kempke's uncle, Cory Hopkins, told Deseret News that the family members were initially angry and thought the shooter should have been more careful, but dropped anger.

"We've all had time to think, and you know … this family will live with it for the rest of their lives, and I think it's also tragic on this," Hopkins told Deseret News.

Authorities did not lay charges at this time as the shooting appeared to be unintentional.

"It seems to have been unintentional," said the sheriff's office. "Once the investigation is complete, all information and evidence will be forwarded to the Rich County Attorney for further actions or charges"
