A boy survives being impaled by a long meat skewer on his face

A 10-year-old boy miraculously survived the fall of a ladder on a meat skewer that entered his face, the Kansas City Star reports.

Xavier Cunningham was attacked by wasps while he was playing in a cabin near his home in Harrisonville, Missouri on September 8th.

While he was fleeing the wasps, the boy fell four feet off his head first as he descended a ladder and landed on a meat skewer that passed directly across his face until he was dead. 39, back of his skull.

"I heard screaming and I went down the stairs," Xavier's mother, Gabrielle Miller, told the newspaper. "He came in and he had this thing just go out."

While the family was driving Xavier to the hospital, the boy told his parents he was dying. Xavier was transferred to two different hospitals until he arrived at the Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, where doctors found that the skewer had miraculously avoided anything that was vital.

Still, surgeons worried about the risks involved in removing the skewer and suggested waiting until the next morning to assemble the doctors involved in order to attempt the extraction. This meant that Xavier had to stay in the hospital for hours with the sharp tool lodged in his face.

"If he became anxious or nervous and was starting to move, he could move the device and cause serious injuries that he had not yet had," said Koji Ebersole, director. of the health system of the University of Kansas.

Yet doctors were amazed that Xavier even survived to this point.

"You could not do it better," Ebersole told the newspaper. "It was one in a million so that it would go 5 or 6 inches across the front of the face to the back and not hit those things.

He added, "I have not seen anything go to this depth in a situation that could survive, let alone where we think the recovery will be almost complete, if not complete."

The one – hour operation was successful and Xavier is expected to be released within a few days, reported FOX 4.

"He could have drained his blood in this field, covered with yellow jackets," said Xavier's father. "Only God could have directed things in a way that would save him like that … it was truly a miracle."
