A British mountain cyclist was killed by a hunter in the French Alps.

The 34-year-old man was killed by a stray bullet while riding in a wood near Montriond, near the Swiss border.

He was cycling on a popular mountain track when a 22-year-old man shot him and took him to the hospital in severe shock.

It is believed that the victim owns a local restaurant in the small town of Les Gets – the Foreign Ministry says that he is providing support to his family.

According to witnesses, he traveled in thick woods but wore bright blue clothes that should have made it easily identifiable.

Over the past three years, more than 20 people have died from hunting accidents in France.

On a local Facebook group, people expressed their horror and discussed the prevention of new incidents.

"We must put an end to this situation, immediately ban the hunt," said one of them, using the French term for "chasse". "There are no excuses, people's lives are broken."

But others said that hunting was a "tradition of a lifetime", even though some people think that it is "outdated and cruel", and called for safety measures such as the limitation hunting on certain days.

An investigation was opened on the incident of "manslaughter," French prosecutors said.
