SOUNDVIEW, Bronx (WABC) –

The owner of a Bronx grocery store shot dead a man who he said was trying to steal his business.

Police said that the store owner had killed the potential thief in self-defense, even though he had found no evidence that the intruder had a firearm.

That happened around 22:30 Sunday at J Market on Morrison Avenue in the Soundview section.

Police said Daniel Meeks, 32, entered the store, asked for money and tried to jump over the counter.

The 43-year-old owner shot Meeks in the head.

He was pronounced dead at the Jacobi Medical Center. The store owner has been questioned by the police, but should not be charged.

The NYPD stated that the weapon was legal and that the shop owner did not have a criminal record.

The police investigation is ongoing and the name of the store owner has not yet been released.
