A candidate in the House of Republicans in northern California was attacked by a man wielding a knife at a local fair over the weekend, authorities said Tuesday.

Alameda County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ray Kelly said no one was seriously injured when Farzad Fazeli allegedly attacked Rudy Peters at the Castro Valley Fall Festival on Sunday afternoon.

Kelly stated that Peters was holding one of the vendors' booths during the festival when Fazeli, 35, approached him "aggressively" and that he made disparaging remarks about his party political and its elected representatives. " At this point, authorities suspect Fazeli of having pulled out a switch knife and tried to stab Peters, but the weapon malfunctioned.

Kelly told the Sacramento Bee that Fazeli might have thrown Peters a glass. He added that at one point, the candidate had used a campaign sign to defend himself from the attacker.

"You're dealing with a knife – a deadly weapon," Kelly told the newspaper. "Anything you can use, including a sign, would be a good option, which would give you some level of protection."

Fazeli fled the scene but was arrested shortly thereafter, charged with criminal assault, criminal threats, brandishing a weapon and possessing a switch blade. He is detained in Santa Rita Prison.

Peters, a 56-year-old Navy veteran, faces incumbent Democrat Eric Swalwell in California's 15th congressional district.
