A Californian whose unsuccessful attempt resulted in the death of 28-year-old Andrew Finch pleaded guilty to charges of jail sentence of at least 20 years. Tyler Barriss was charged with cyberbullying, conspiracy and false information leading to death. He also pleaded guilty to launching numerous bomb threats against schools, universities, shopping malls, the FBI headquarters and the FCC during his vote on internet neutrality.
Barriss was first indicted in January 2018, after being arrested shortly after the fatal shooting on December 28, 2017. The hoax call came from a disagreement over a Call of Duty match on which a bet of $ 1.50 was placed. The events escalated, however, due to the involvement of two Barriss teammates, Casey Viner and Shane Gaskill, in the attack that led to Finch's death. Viner asked Barriss to crush Gaskill, who in turn prompted him to give an address to which he no longer lived. Andrew Finch, who was living at this address at the time, was shot dead by police after he saw his hands resting on his belt. The three accused then deleted the messages exchanged between them after realizing what had happened.
Viner and Gaskill are both awaiting trial for fraud and obstruction of justice, while Viner faces another charge of conspiracy to make false reports or hoaxes to the police. The sentence for Barriss must be January 30th.
