GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – A cameraman from the Associated Press agency was shot and wounded Monday as he was covering a protest in the northern Gaza Strip, witnesses said and officials said. health.
Rashid Rashid, 47, was shot in the leg during a weekly protest next to the Israeli border. The doctors said that he was suffering from multiple fractures above the ankle and that he would need a surgical procedure.
Witnesses said that he was about 600 meters from the fence, away from the protesters. He was directing a live camera on an elevated area overlooking the event wearing a blue helmet and a brown safety vest with the word "PRESS" written in white.
Colleagues said the fire appeared to be coming from the Israeli side of the border. The Israeli army said that she was investigating the incident.
Najib Jobain, the PA's main producer in Gaza, said he was talking on the phone with Rashid after being shot and wounded.
