HOUSTON – The driver of a subway bus that hit and killed a woman on Wednesday was formally charged, police said.
According to the authorities, Octavio Martinez, 58, was charged with homicide by criminal negligence after police said to have hit and killed a woman in the Cypress Station area near the intersection of Red Oak and FM Road 1960.
The victim descended from a METRO bus when another returned to the street, bypassed the first bus and hit the woman, police said.
According to the police, the driver reportedly said that he did not see the woman, who also worked at a nearby day-care center.
"I see this bus – the man who hit it – approach, then get around the parked bus and knock it over," said a witness who wants to conceal his identity. "I caught my son, I went to the other bus we just got off and I was like" He hit her! He hit her!
The woman told KPRC2's journalist, Cathy Hernandez, that she went on the bus every day with the victim, claiming she was sweet and sometimes giving her money for the bus.
METRO spokeswoman Tracy Jackson said the driver had not seen the woman.
"Apparently, he did not see it," Jackson said. "He only realized afterwards that he felt like he had hit something, then he asked the first operator for help, which was why he parked next to the first one. bus."
The witness told KPRC2 that if he was not, the driver may not have stopped at all.
"They say he did not see her," said the witness. "This street is already dark, it is dark all day, every day. There is no reason why you should (drive) the opposite side of the street at any speed from here. "
Martinez had worked as a METRO bus driver for 27 years, according to METRO.
Both buses have surveillance cameras. The video cameras will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
