Police opened an investigation Monday after a child found a loaded pistol in a sofa in an Indiana IKEA and fired a shot inside the store.
Authorities say the pistol had fallen off a client's pants while he sat down to test the store's sofa in Fishers, Indianapolis, reports WTTV. The man would not have realized that the weapon had disappeared and would have continued to shop.
Later in the day, a group of children found the weapon and one of them shot. No injuries were reported and the store remained open after the incident.
"It's important to remember that if you carry a firearm on you, make sure you always have control over it. It's just a part of the possession of firearms, from the responsible possession of firearms, "Sgt. Police Fishers Tom Weger told WTTV.
IKEA issued a statement on Monday saying, "We take this incident very seriously" and "offered the family of the child involved our most sincere apologies." In the statement, IKEA said that it has a policy "unarmed" in its stores to prevent such incidents like that.
The Hamilton County Attorney is studying the case, KCRA reported.
According to a 2016 report, Indiana ranked seventh in the country for accidental shooting involving children.
