A Connecticut mother was seriously injured Thursday night after lighting up a "dynamite stick quarter" that she mistook for a candle, officials said.

According to a statement from the city of Bridgeport, the incident occurred after a thunderstorm in the area and the family tried unsuccessfully to buy emergency lighting in a Home Depot.

"The family remembers that when they bought their home two years ago, they thought they had left behind candles in the basement," the statement said. "She tried to light one of what she thought was a candle and turned out to be a quarter of a stick of dynamite."

The 30-year-old woman was finally taken to hospital after suffering "extreme" hand injuries and "serious" facial injuries, officials said.

The mother, who was at home with her husband and two children, was the only one injured in the "tragic accident," officials said.

An additional explosive device was then discovered at home, which was removed by the authorities and "later detonated and disposed of" by the Connecticut State Police.

The authorities chose not to lay charges because the incident appeared to have been involuntary and the family was not aware that "what they had at home were explosive devices," have said officials.
