A Connecticut woman confuses dynamite with a candle during a power outage

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut –

A woman was seriously injured in Connecticut after authorities reported taking a stick of dynamite for a candle.

The Bridgeport Fire Marshal's Office has completed its initial investigation and characterizes the tragic accident incident.

Authorities say the Lindley Street family's home lost power as a result of thunderstorms on Thursday night, and after a trip to Home Depot closed to buy emergency lighting, the family remembered what they were doing. They thought they were candles in the basement residents.

The victim, aged about 30 years old and mother of two married children, tried to light one of the "candles". Instead, it was a stick of dynamite. She suffered serious injuries to one of her hands, including the potential loss of several fingers. She also suffered serious facial injuries.

She was taken to Bridgeport Hospital before being transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital.

The entire family was home at the time, but no other injuries were reported. One of the windows of the house was destroyed.

The Bridgeport Fire Department and the Connecticut State Police searched the home and removed another dynamite device. He was then detonated and eliminated by state police.

The houses surrounding this house on each side have also searched as a precaution, but no other explosive device has been found.

It is illegal to possess dynamite or fireworks or firecrackers in Connecticut, but since this appears to be an accident and the residents of the house did not know that they were in possession of devices explosives, no charges should be laid.
