It may be too late for readers who are already stuffing themselves with turkey faces. But for those who are still tidying up the house for Thanksgiving guests, please note: Do not throw away old lottery tickets without first checking the numbers.
A couple from Mandeville, Louisiana, refreshed the house earlier this week when they came across a five-month-old Louisiana Lotto ticket taking up space on their nightstand. It turned out that the value stands at $ 1.8 million, reported the affiliate of NBC WDSU.
Harold and Tina Ehrenberg bought the winning jackpot ticket for the June 6 draw, before forgetting everything.
"We have family coming to town for Thanksgiving, so I was cleaning the house and I found some lottery tickets on my nightstand that we had not checked out," said Tina Ehrenberg at the couple's visit to the lottery headquarters on Monday.
She added that she and her husband immediately checked the numbers against the registers of the Lottery website.
She called numbers while her husband was holding the ticket.
"Let me know what you think?" she asked her husband.
Each number was a match.
"We checked the numbers again and again," said Harold Ehrenberg to the Louisiana Lottery officials. "Plus, I called the hotline winning numbers again and again," added his wife.
Officials said the couple discovered the ticket just in time. The price was due to expire two weeks later. "Prizes for draw style games must be claimed within 180 days of the draw at which the prize was won," according to Louisiana Lottery rules.
It's a year-end fairy tale for the couple, who has announced plans to save the manna – $ 1,274,313 after state tax and federal taxes – toward retirement.
"We do not intend to buy anything crazy or make great trips," said Tina Ehrenberg.
"The most fun will be to deposit this check," said Harold Ehrenberg.
For the moment, the couple has more than 1.2 million reasons to be thankful for Thanksgiving.
