Update: The authorities corrected the count of the victims, claiming that eight people had died, four of whom are illegally in the United States. They initially stated that nine of them were dead, seven of whom were illegally in the United States.

PHOENIX (AP) – Eight people, four of whom were illegally in the United States, were killed in a head-on collision on an Arizona highway, officials said Thursday.

The accident occurred around 22 hours. On Wednesday, a car struck an SUV carrying nine people on National Highway 79 south of Florence and about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Arizona's public security department said.

The agency declined to say whether the SUV was being used as part of a smuggling operation or whether it could be connected to a government immigration facility located near Florence.

The investigators do not know the cause of the crash. The southbound car, a Buick, had crossed the center line and struck the SUV, which was heading north.

Officials say the SUV driver and front passenger were US citizens, but seven others in the vehicle were illegally immigrating to the country.

The driver, the front passenger and four immigrants from the vehicle were killed. Three other immigrants were taken to hospitals.

The driver and front passenger of the Buick were also killed.
