MIAMI (AP) – A cruiser who went overboard and apparently strode the water for 22 hours was in a stable state on Monday, one day after being rescued by another cruise ship.
"This was nothing miraculous," said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, in a statement.
According to the US Coast Guard, the 33-year-old crew member went to sea at 3:20 pm. Saturday of the Norwegian getaway, about 45 kilometers northwest of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The agency suspended the search Saturday night after hours of research.
But a booth steward of the Carnival Glory saw the crew member in the water at 1:20 pm. Sunday.
Carnival spokeswoman AnnMarie Matthews told The Associated Press that the man had no safety devices when he was picked up by the Carnival Glory and that they "can only assume that he has probably trampled all the time."
"Congratulations to the Carnival Glory team for this incredible rescue effort from another sailor," said Duffy.
Norwegian said in a statement that the Miami-based cruise line is "extremely grateful" to Carnival Cruise Line, also based in Miami.
"We are so happy to know that the individual is safe and will soon be reunited with his friends and family," the Norwegian statement said.
The Getaway returned to Miami from an eight-day cruise on Sunday. Glory continued to Cozumel amid a seven-day cruise
