A man who undertakes a charity trip across the country on a recumbent bicycle to raise money for children with cancer was killed Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a car on a Mississippi highway, officials said .
James Dobson, of Lebanon, Maine, began his Positive Vibes tour in New Hampshire on October 1 for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Children's Hospital. His goal was to travel 60 miles a day to San Diego.
It was his 44th day on the road when a 2016 Dodge Challenger hit Dobson, who was riding a bicycle, while traveling in the western United States of America, according to American Hattiesburg.
Hunter Buckley, the driver of the vehicle, said he was unable to avoid hitting Dobson. The accident is under investigation.

The 32-year-old was declared dead on the scene.
Dobson's friends congratulated him for his character, saying to the newspaper: "You could not meet a nicer person."
"James was contagious," said Doug Bower at the American Hattiesburg. "His personality was fabulous."
Keith Loud, the hospital's chief medical officer, said in a statement that he was moved not only by Dobson's dedication but also by the courage he had needed to cross the country and give back .
"A self-styled guy from" ordinary town guy ", James was a shining star, and we are honored to have shone his shine in our direction," said Loud. "We express our deepest condolences to his friends and family."
Dobson has already traveled to San Diego to raise funds for the hospital, driving a minivan across the country and having people sign along the way, the newspaper reported.
James Richesin, another friend of Dobson, told the newspaper that he had spent three months training to prepare for cycling.
"He wanted to do something amazing," Richesin said. "Then he decided."
