A Dallas police officer returned home after work and killed a neighbor on Thursday after taking his apartment on his own, the police said.

The Dallas Police Department said in a press release Friday that the officer had arrived at his apartment in uniform after working a shift. She called the dispatch to report the shooting and told the police that she thought the victim's apartment was hers when she entered.

It was not immediately clear how the officer entered the apartment or what led to the shooting.

"I will not go into this information now," Sgt. Warren Mitchell, a spokesman for the police department, said. "I mean, we did not interview her, and as I said, it's only a preliminary statement, we still have a lot to do in this investigation. It's all we can give you right now. "

The victim has been identified as Botham Shem Jean, 26, reported FOX 4 News. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Botham Shem Jean was fatally shot on Thursday, August 6, 2018.

Harding University, a private university in Searcy, Arkansas, said that John was originally from the Caribbean country of St. Lucia and often ran worship services on the campus of the school. He graduated from school in 2016. Since then, he has worked in risk management for the accounting firm and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, the school said.

Jean's mother, Allie, is questioned about how the deadly mixture occurred.

"Someone must be crazy for not realizing that they have entered the wrong apartment," Allie Jean told NBC News. "It's a single person, things are different on the inside."

Botham Shem Jean was from the Caribbean Saint Lucia.

Allie said that her son was a good student and that he was active in his church.

"We were very, very close," she said. "We talked about everything, politics, Botham loved everyone and everyone loved him."

Residents were also shocked by the incident.

"[It’s] super scary because the police are supposed to protect you and then they go home and, you know, you just hang out in your own house and then they go home thinking they're home or little imported. I do not know if she was tired but it's rather scary, "FOX 4 told Richard Healy Nelson, who lives in the compound where the shooting took place.

"It's terrible, I hope it's only a tragic accident and nothing more than that," said Tomiya Melvin, who lives nearby, at Dallas News. "This area has pleased me because it always seemed so safe, and until now it has been, but I will not let my door unlock, that's for sure."
