UPDATE: 3.30 pm

A man was shot dead after police opened fire in the streets of downtown Portland early Sunday. The person who was shot, who was not identified by the police, subsequently died in a local hospital.

Patrol officers reacted to gunfire around Southwest Third Avenue and Harvey Milk Street (Stark) early Sunday morning, police said. The police then "hired a suspect" on the scene, according to the police, where they shot at the man. No officer was injured.

The police then confirmed that one person involved in the incident had died. Additional details and the identity of the person will be published pending notification of the family.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the police fired on one person after he was involved in a previous shootout in which two others were shot and wounded.

Officers retrieved a weapon from the scene and Portland Police spokeswoman Natasha Haunsperger said the gang enforcement team was "very involved" in the 39, investigation of the shooting.

Police filmed more than four streets around the area on Sunday, while investigators gathered in Fourth and Stark's public car parks.

The police involved were put on paid leave pending the completion of a grand jury investigation, in accordance with the office's policy, police said. The office will also conduct an internal investigation into the incident.

By mid-afternoon on Sunday, about 40 people had gathered in the downtown area near the scene of the shooting, lighting commemorative candles and writing chalk tributes on the sidewalk and the street. One woman, who did not want to identify, said the group planned to hold a vigil on the spot "until the candles are lit."
