DENVER – A Denver policeman is expected to survive after being shot in the leg on Sunday morning while he was answering a call.

Officers and paramedics were on scene at 3:45 pm in a block house 4800 West 10th Ave. According to Denver police spokesman Doug Schepman, they were shooting a victim when the suspect opened fire on them. Officers fired back and the suspect withdrew.

The policeman was taken to hospital in a stable condition with a gunshot wound in his leg that did not put his life in danger.

Other officers on stage applied a tourniquet. All Denver police officers have a tourniquet kit, Schepman said. "It's a great life-saving tool," he added.

The woman shot was the mother of the suspect. She was shot in the lower back and was also transported to the hospital in a stable condition.

The SWAT agents entered the house about an hour after the shooting and arrested the suspect without further incident.
