A representative of the Sacramento County Sheriff was killed and another injured in a shootout that began with a dispute in a Pep Boys store, officials said.
The alleged gunman and a passerby were injured during Monday's shootout, but were expected to survive, Sheriff Scott Jones said.
At approximately 2 pm, MPs responded to a report about a dispute between a customer and an employee of the Rancho Cordova auto parts store just outside Sacramento.
Members were responding to a "routine call" that did not indicate that the client had a firearm, Jones said.
"As soon as they arrived and engaged the subject, he returned as if to run or run away, then immediately returned and started firing without warning," said the sheriff.
MP Mark Stasyuk, 27, was shot in the upper body and killed. Assistant Julie Robertson, 28, was shot in the arm but shot at the same time as the attacker. He was arrested by other officers after a second shootout, Jones said.
His name was not immediately published.
Neither one nor the other was wearing a camera.
The Monday shootout was the second deadly incident for the Sacramento County Sheriff 's Department in just over a year. MP Robert French was killed and two officers from the California Highway Patrol were injured last August during an investigation of a car theft network in an unincorporated area outside of Sacramento.
"It's an incredible hole that never really fills in the heart of our department," Jones said.
Stasyuk had been with the department for four years, while Robertson has been there for about three years, according to the Sheriff's Department. Both were assigned to the patrol at Rancho Cordova, who is contracting with the Sheriff's Office for Law Enforcement.
"We are very grateful for her sacrifice and very sad for her family," said Mayor Linda Budge about Stasyuk.
Governor Jerry Brown issued a statement of condolence and said flags on the Capitol would be carried to half the staff in the hon.
