Behind the big sporting party awaiting the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the tournament was marked by a series of sub-trays that painted an ugly image even before the games began.
USA TODAY HUI Sports
The fan was captured by writing "England" through the red painting statue.
The statue was created in the image of Fyodor Cherenkov, considered the best player in the history of the Russian Premier League team Spartak Moscow. The photos posted on social media clearly show the damage.
English fans have traveled in the tournament in fewer numbers than in the past, perhaps because of fears of clashes with Russian hooligans before the tournament. There have been relatively few incidents, although social media videos have emerged earlier in the case of a fan of England doing a Nazi salute.
After defeating Colombia, England will face Sweden on Saturday in semifinal at Samara. A large influx of supporters is expected to enter the country, with even more to follow if the team reaches the semifinal of next week in Moscow
