MELVILLE, Long Island (WABC) –

A 31-year-old father was killed after being hit by a car on the Long Island Expressway.

This happened Saturday around 12:30 pm in the lane heading east near Exit 49 in Melville.

Police said that Eric Preto, of Selden, was driving east when his car stopped the car in front of him. Preto left his car to inspect the damage and talk to the other driver, while his passengers, his pregnant wife and his two-year-old son, remained inside the car.

As Preto returned to his car, Preto was hit by a Subaru and another vehicle hit Preto's car.

Preto was declared dead on the scene.

Preto's wife and son, as well as the driver who hit him, were taken to hospital for assessment.

Social media publications show that the Preto family was at a wedding in Jersey City, reported the Associated Press.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident. Three of the vehicles were heavily damaged. Part of the road was closed for about six hours when police opened an investigation.

No arrests were made.

The detectives ask anyone who has been able to attend the accident to contact the second team at 631-854-8252.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
