The fire, which began Wednesday night in Bay Point, was reportedly caused by a power line that fell, according to Chevron Pipe Line Company, which operates the pipeline under threat.
Chevron stated that it closed the gas line and worked with the fire department to evacuate the premises as a precaution.
The company "is trying to reduce the pressure in the pipeline of risky gas" and the ventilation produces a shrill sound, "described as a jet engine sound" coming from a pipeline facility in the community neighboring Antioch, said the County Fire Protection District of Contra Costa.
About 4,000 people have been evacuated from 1,400 homes, the Contra Costa County Fire District has announced.
The Willow Cove Elementary School, located near Pittsburg, will be closed Thursday due to fire and evacuations, officials said fire departments said.
The fire was near a valve junction of the Northern California Pipeline, said Chevron.
Evacuation centers have been set up in a church and Bay Point Rapid Transit (Bay Point) station.
