PORT ORCHARD, Wash. – A firefighter from the Puget Sound area was injured while he was involved in fighting wildfires taking place in southern California on Thursday morning.
The firefighter of South Kitsap Fire & Rescue was one of the members of the department team who was working on the Woolsey Fire in Ventura County when he was hit by a car .
He was transported by helicopter to a local hospital with members of his team, officials said. The extent of his injuries was not given, but he had to survive.
"We are currently focusing on the firefighter, his family, our fire department and our community," said officials at South Kitsap Fire & Rescue.
The Woolsey Fire began on November 8 and quickly became one of the largest and most destructive fires in the state's history. Firefighters have made steady progress this week, but have warned of many hot spots.
Three people were found dead in the fire so far.
