A Florida professor says she was fired after handing out zeroes to students who had not handed the job

When some of Diane Tirado's eighth grade students did not go, they gave them zeros. But, according to Tirado, the Port St. Lucie School District requires that the lowest score be 50%, apparently only to show up.

But Tirado refused to give percentage points if the students did not do anything, so she was fired on September 14, she said.

She told Inside Edition that the shot did not surprise her.

"I spoke up and put the system to the test," Tirado said. "The children know it and a child looked me right in the eye and crossed his arms saying," You have to give me a 50 and I have nothing to do. "

Tirado said that she was not allowed to say goodbye to her students in person, so she left them a note on the whiteboard instead.

"Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life!" the note read. "I was fired for refusing to give you 50% for not having anything delivered."

The school district said it does not prevent teachers from distributing zeros for incomplete or uncompleted work and added that Tirado was fired because his performance was deemed substandard.

For its part, Tirado hopes to find work as a teacher in another school district.
