A Fort Worth officer who was shot in the head is currently in the critical care unit in critical condition after a shooting incident following an armed robbery on Friday morning, police said.
Chief Joel Fitzgerald confirmed at a press conference that the officer had been shot in the head and was fighting for his life at the John Peter Smith Hospital.
The 18-year-old veteran was identified as Garrett Hull by his family and they provided a photo of him.
Approximately 50 officers were sent to a robbery call around midnight at the Vaquero Sports Bar, 403 W. Biddison St., Sgt. Chris Britt said.
The officers monitored three individuals when the individuals entered the sports bar and flew, Britt said.
They left the bar and the police clashed with individuals in the 3500 block of May Street and the individuals fled on foot, Britt said. One of the individuals had a gun and fired on officers, said Britt.
Officers fired back, killing the gunman on the scene. The second person, who was a woman, was arrested, said Britt. The third person fled to the neighborhood and the officers found them and arrested them, said Britt.
The injured officer was rushed to John Peter Smith Hospital.
At a press conference, Chief Joel Fitzgerald said that police, some in plainclothes and others in uniform, were monitoring suspected thieves and that they knew the location of the robbery had people inside.
