A girl swaying in a hammock is killed when the tree falls on her

Sabina Surjit Henderson, a 7-year-old girl from Virginia, was killed on Saturday when a tree spilled and hit her as she swayed in a hammock during a family reunion.

Brambleton's sophomore and her 8-year-old cousin were pushed by another child when the hammock tree was tied to uprooted people and fell on them. The emergency staff reacted to the scene shortly after 18 hours. local time, and Sabina was flown to Inova Fairfax hospital in Annandale.

"The 7-year-old woman has suffered life-threatening injuries," said Kraig Troxell of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office at PEOPLE. "She was airlifted from the scene and later succumbed to these injuries and died Saturday."

The 8-year-old boy, who was rushed to hospital by ambulance, suffered life-threatening injuries and has since been released, Troxell adds.

The two children were visiting the property – an 1870s farm now serving as a bed and breakfast in Purcellville, reported FOX 5 – for a family party.

"I realized it was the property of the grandparents, it was a grandfather party and it was a family reunion in this house," says Troxell.

They had played in the hammock all day long, with close relatives nearby.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office believes that recent rainy weather in the area may have weakened the foundation of the tree. The tree was also "very old," notes Troxell.

"Everything indicates that it's a tragic accident," he says. "There were questions about whether rain played a role. I think there are probably a few factors, but the ground is very soft right now. "

In a statement to NBC 4, Sabina's father, Ben Henderson, described his daughter as a smart and humorous girl who cheered the lives of all who knew her.

"Sabina was smart, a spiritual girl who loved telling jokes and making others laugh," Henderson said in his statement to the press.

"She was a powerful personality who lit up the room and was a memorable force for all who met her. She was incredibly kind and caring to her friends and family. Sabina was truly and completely loved by all who knew her. His loss has torn a giant hole in our lives that will never be repaired. We will never be able to recover, we will only survive. "

The family is organizing a memorial service for Sabina on September 28 at Brambleton.
