A good Samaritan helped a stranded driver. Police say that another man killed him – and stole his car.

The tragedy that took place Thursday night on a Florida highway began with an act of compassion when Dhimitri Andoni stopped his car on the shoulder of Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg. The 22-year-old saw a vehicle deviate and fell on the median and wanted to help.

Shortly after, the stranded vehicle returned to the road, and Andoni returned to his own car, a four-door Hyundai 2015, according to Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Gaskins.

It is at that time, according to authorities, that a 1996 F-150 truck fell down the road and struck Andoni – apparently by killing him.

A video shows the truck driver coming out of his truck and checking to see if the man he hit died, Gaskins said.

The man then took Andoni's Hyundai and departed, leaving his truck behind the middle lane, said Gaskins.

Authorities have identified the man as Dana Thomas Byrd, 30, of St. Petersburg.

"Byrd's stopped after the impact," Gaskins told the Washington Post. "He understands that [Andoni is] dead, get in his car and leave. It could not be more a strange situation than that. "

It is unclear why no one stopped to help Andoni after he was hit at about 9pm. Thursday, or if passersby witnessed what happened. A few hours later, Andoni's father used GPS to locate the Hyundai – which had been abandoned in a building about two miles north of the accident site – and reported the disappearance of his son, said authorities.

Byrd apparently left his wallet inside the Hyundai, Gaskins said. In addition, the entire incident was captured on a GoPro camera that worked as a camera in Andoni's car, he added.

"We have a video of GoPro basically showing the victim who is stalling to help, get hit, the guy who stole his car, letting go, the nine meters," he said.

According to Gaskins, a ranger from the Florida Department of Transportation labeled the van abandoned around 3:40 am on Friday.

It was not until 12:30 pm Friday, however, another ranger discovered Andoni's body in the median near the abandoned truck, Gaskins said.

According to Andoni's LinkedIn profile, he was a graduate student in finance.

A spokesperson for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium confirmed that Andoni had worked in this store. "A very sad situation," said David Yates, spokesman for the aquarium, in an email to The Post. "He was considered a thoughtful and optimistic person, well loved by the members of our team."

On Friday night, soldiers arrested Byrd at his home in St. Petersburg, about three miles west of where the Hyundai had been abandoned. Byrd was charged with stealing cars and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death. He is held at Pinellas County Jail with a bond of $ 100,000.

Documents from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office show that Byrd has been arrested in this county 16 times since 2005 for offenses such as "criminal mischief in a place of worship", theft, trespassing, neglect of a child, and driving with Impaired.
