A man from Maryland, arrested after helping a drunken neighbor find his way back, is convinced that he was "undoubtedly" a victim of racial profiling by the police.
Samir Ahmed, 23, told HuffPost that he had been confronted by police officers from the Montgomery County Police Department after receiving a call about a drunk man who needed medical attention .
An 18-minute video about the incident, which went viral, shows that Ahmed is being stopped by police on his sister's vehicle. Spectators repeatedly told him "that he was helping the person under the influence".
"I explained that I had brought the drunk man home and that she [the female officer] began to get furious when I did not tell him his exact address, "Ahmed said.
During the altercation, the police repeatedly asked Ahmed if he was in possession of marijuana before accusing him of being intoxicated.
After a search, the police found marijuana but, according to Ahmed, "it was so little that I did not even know I had it."
The 23-year-old son, son of Ethiopian immigrants, does not deny having marijuana, but he believes "without a doubt" that "the race played a role" in his arrest.
"Because I know that if I was blonde with blue eyes, it would not have mattered," he said.
Ahmed said he was aware of three neighbors who had filed a lawsuit against the police department since the incident, adding that "the whole neighborhood had seen it, basically."
The video also drew the attention of actor D.L. Hughley, who shared it on Instagram.
The Montgomery County Police Service did not immediately respond to HuffPost's request for comment.
