A Mississippi grandmother was arrested after the lifeless body of a 20-month-old girl was found in an oven, burned and stabbed, confirms PEOPLE.
At around 7 pm Monday night, the authorities were summoned to a residence in the small town of Shaw after a family member made this shocking discovery, said Bolivar County Sheriff, Kevin Williams, when from a press conference Tuesday, reported WREG.
After arriving at the scene, the baby, who, according to authorities, was stabbed before being placed inside the heating oven, was declared dead.
The grandmother of the girl, Carolyn Jones, aged 48, was immediately detained. She is now charged with first degree murder, confirmed the Bolivar County Sheriff's Department at PEOPLE. His bond was set at $ 500,000.
It is not clear if the baby was alive when it was put in the oven.
According to Williams, "the authorities have reason to believe that the child was stabbed and burned," but the baby's body was taken to a crime laboratory to confirm the exact cause of death.
"Dark days like these can only be enlightened when justice is done," Williams said.

"I have been in law enforcement for a long time, almost 26 years. Some of the most horrible scenes I've seen in law enforcement involve children. These are some of the … they have an effect on us. We do not want that to happen, but unfortunately, things like that happen. "
"It's one of the most horrible things I've ever seen," said Williams.
The Bolivar County Sheriff's Department also told PEOPLE that the child "lived in the residence with Jones at the time of the murder."

Prior to Jones' arrest, the authorities were only called to the residence once after the discovery of a "reptile in the house". "It's a relatively quiet neighborhood," said Williams.
When asked for a reason, Williams said, "We are trying to solve this problem ourselves. We have no idea at this stage. "
"The Bolivar County Sheriff's Office is working with the Shaw Police Department, the Bolivar County District Attorney's Office, the Bolivar County Coroner's Office and the Mississippi Investigative Bureau to bring all the evidence so that we can ensure justice, "added Williams.
