A California high school took disciplinary action against at least 10 students after posting racist and homophobic messages on T-shirts at a senior event last week.
Last Thursday, a group of seniors from Escondido High School, near San Diego, took pictures wearing letterheads spelling out words such as "Nigger" and "Fags" at a picnic for seniors. .
The school organizes the event every year and allows students to wear shirts that spell out pre-approved words for a high-level photo. But this year, several students decided to extract letters from other words to form offensive statements, and then posted photos of the stunt on Snapchat and Instagram.
The images astonished and irritated their classmates, as well as former students, who filmed the messages and shared them on social media platforms, condemning the actions.
Cade Pannell, a graduate of Escondido High School two years ago, viewed a video of students on one of his Snapchat stories on Thursday, and stated that he was "shocked that it came from my high school" . The 19-year-old took a picture and posted it on Instagram, where she quickly became viral.
After seeing the images, school and district officials, aided by the Escondido Police Department, investigated the incident and then took action against the students involved. It is unclear, however, what kind of punishment the students will face for their actions during the picnic.
"I want to assure you that steps have been taken and that the students are suffering the consequences, but the details must remain confidential," said Adriana Lepe-Ramirez, director of Escondido High School, in a statement. communicated.
