A hamburger chain in Hawaii closed a restaurant in Honolulu for cleaning up after a video posted on social media appeared to show that a rat was cooking on the grill.

Teddy's Bigger Burgers closed the Mapunapuna site and fired two employees who appeared in the Snapchat video.

"We are horrified by the fact that a former teenage employee is behaving in this way and making such a video on which we are investigating its authenticity," said Richard Stula, president of Teddy's Bigger Burgers.

The company has launched a "complete disinfection" and replaces the equipment and utensils of the fast food restaurant, after the video was shared with them several days ago, Stula said in a statement.

"We will then send a team of companies to inspect and conduct a thorough audit of the site before it can be reopened," Stula said.

The State Department of Health was scheduled to inspect the Mapunapuna Street Restaurant on Friday.

The company is also contacting a licensed pest control operator to examine the restaurant for rodents, said Peter Oshiro, Hawaii's environmental health program manager.

"DOH appreciates the corrective and proactive efforts made by the restaurant owner to protect public health," Oshiro said in a statement.

The restaurant received a green sign during its last official inspection in June.

The company is currently consulting with its lawyers on possible lawsuits against former employees, Stula said.

"We are horrified by the fact that a former employee creates something like this by trying to destroy our reputation regardless of our more than 20 years of quality and aloha," he said. .
