A high school footballer from Georgia died Sunday night after suffering a serious brain injury following a game played Friday night, the Atlanta FOX 5 announced.

Dylan Thomas, 16, was a linebacker at Pike County High School in Zebulon, about an hour's drive south of Atlanta. On Friday, Pike County played against a college team from Peach County High School.

Thomas collided with another player in the middle of the game, but returned to the field, his uncle told FOX 5. When Thomas was sitting on the sideline, his arm and leg became numb and he collapsed, said his uncle.

Thomas was flown to a hospital. He underwent two surgeries to relieve swelling in his brain, reported FOX 5. Doctors were struggling to control swelling during the weekend. Hundreds of people gathered at Pike County High School for a vigil Sunday evening, reported WMAZ-TV.

Around 8 pm Sunday, Thomas succumbed to his injury. A school administrator has confirmed the death of Thomas at WMAZ-TV.

A fundraiser was set up to help the family pay their medical bills and lose their income. The family said the funeral arrangements were in progress.
