They prayed for a miracle, gathering on the same ground where, two nights earlier, 17-year-old Dylan Thomas suddenly collapsed during a high school football game.e.
But a few hours after the vigil, the word has spread that Pike County high school student was dead. His uncle, Nick Burgess, confirmed the news on Facebook late Sunday.

We do not know what triggered Thomas's death. A family member told Channel 2 Action News that Thomas had told a teammate "he was not feeling well" shortly before he left.
Another Georgia player is fighting for his life after he collapsed during Saturday's game in Nashville. Westlake High School graduate Christion Abercrombie, a sophomore at Tennessee State, remains in critical condition after losing consciousness in a game against Vanderbilt on Saturday.
"He was taking a block, and it was nothing malicious or dirty, or anything like that," said Tennessee state coach Rod Reed on his Sunday morning radio show. "Just an unfortunate situation."
Abercrombie – a linebacker, like Thomas – left the field without any help. Abercrombie told the trainers that he had a headache. Then, minutes later, he collapsed, according to his trainer.
"Christian is resting. He is fighting, "said his mother, Staci Abercombie. "We trust God and continue to pray to him."
Throughout the weekend, updates on the state of Thomas of Pike County have become more and more disastrous. According to his uncle, he was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital on Friday night and the next night his brain swelling had not gone away.
"Things are not going well at all," wrote Burgess on Facebook. "I can not even describe the pain I feel."
His nephew was in a "very critical state," said Burgess, and even though he survives "the odds are that he will not be the same."
Around 1:00 pm Sunday, Burgess has released another update.
"Nothing else can be done for Dylan Thomas, everything depends on the struggle of God and Dylan to live at this stage," wrote Burgess. "He is still in a very critical state. The doctors did everything they could, so keep praying, please.
Meanwhile, details were scarce about the state of Abercrombie until Sunday morning, when his godmother, Tajshure Cornelius, gave reason to hope.
"My godson is amazing with his progress," Cornelius tweeted at 10:12, "Your prayers work".
